Chapter 13: Caden

I was walking back from the bar when the guys appeared. I had been in the café waiting for Mel, but when she hadn’t been there, I’d gone to the bar where Knox and I had been the previous night. I’d felt uneasy there and only stayed for one drink – the atmosphere had been hostile again, and I had decided to leave. It was as I rounded the corner of the alleyway that I saw the guys following me.

I had stopped, thinking that maybe they were just going the same way – they could easily have been taking the same shortcut as I, I was sure – when they stopped, too.

“Waltman!” one of them called in a low voice. It was more like a sneer than a greeting. “Star quarterback, hey? I don’t know about that.”

I turned around. The guys had hoodies on, so I couldn’t see who they were in the darkness; but I could guess. They must be guys from the football the other day. Why else would they be acting so mad at me?

“Look,” I said swiftly. “I don’t want any argument with anyone. I’m quite happy to just stop playing, if you’re so mad about yesterday.”

“Yeah?” one of them demanded. He was taller than the rest, and from his build I thought he was the most dangerous of them. The others I could probably fight off – one at a time, admittedly. But this guy worried me. He was at least as built as I was, and possibly taller. “That doesn’t help much…it just means you could start playing for Waterford again whenever you want.”

“Yes,” I said carefully, backing away. I would have hit one of them by now; but there were five of them. I can take on one guy at a time, but five is just dumbness. “Yes, I could – I have the right to play for the town when I want.”

Somebody snorted. I guessed that was a stupid thing to say, but it was a bit late to stop and think about it. The guys were closing in.

“You have the right?”

“Sure,” I said. “So do you, and every other man in this town.” I was about to say more, but somebody punched me. It was a hard blow and it landed directly over the middle of my chest. I grunted, doubling over from pain. Somebody kicked me in the leg as I stumbled.

“Damn it!” I swore. I was almost losing my balance as blows rained down on me. Somebody punched my stomach again and I gasped for breath, real terror settling in and making me fight desperately hard – these guys meant business and I had been in enough fights to know that. I kicked out and felt my foot strike a leg. That only served to enrage the five men, and blows started to rain on me. I knew that if I fell, somebody would kick me in the head and if they got that right, they might kill me.
